Abhinav Bindra named India's flag bearer

1 Oct 2010. Beijing Olympics gold medalist Abhinav Bindra will lead the 619-member Indian squad during the Delhi Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on Sunday, Oct 3.

On Friday, Oct 1 India's chef de mission Bhubneshwar Kalita made the announcement that the 28-year-old shooter Abhinav Bindra will carry the tri-colour flag during the opening ceremony at Jawahar lal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

"Bindra will be our flag-bearer. India will participate in all the 17 disciplines and have the biggest contingent, comprising 379 male athletes and 240 female athletes," said Bhubneshwar Kalita.

"India would be participating in all 17 events at the Games. We are hoping to do well and finish third or higher. We are hoping to make most of the home advantage and the support of our home crowd," he added.

Indian President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Prince Charles will be the guests of honour during the opening ceremony. indianshooting.com
